MJCarty.com: Top 5 posts of 2024

Here are the five most-read posts of 2024 on MJCarty.com. If you have taken the time to read any words on this wee blog of mine, you have my heartfelt gratitude.

With 2024 very nearly done, it’s time to look back at the words I’ve put out this year and – if readership stats mean anything at all – round up the posts that seem to have resonated the most with the reading public (that is, the infinitesimally small proportion of the global reading public that might ever happen upon my words, of course).

(1) Beastie Boys XXX

BeastieTicketAstoria94

Beastie Boys: A close encounter in 1994 – exactly 30 years ago. Memories that feel simultaneously like yesterday and from another lifetime. I wrote this post to mark the 30th anniversary of the first time I saw the Beastie Boys in concert (my actual ticket stub for this show being in the picture above). That day also saw a close encounter of the Beastie kind, when I – completely without realising it was he – sat pretty much next to the dear departed Adam Yauch (MCA) for a few hours in Soho Square, prior to the gig.

(2) Jeremy Beadle, the unlikely Grateful Dead festival promoter

GratefulDead

Unlikely but true: 1980s UK TV type Jeremy Beadle helped organise and promote the 1972 Bickershaw festival, featuring the Grateful Dead, Hawkwind, Donovan and more. This post tells the tale of how a tale I was told in 1995 – and which I had long suspected of perhaps being somewhat fictional –  proved actually to be 100% true.

(3) Not drinking

NotDrinking

Gentle reader: A question for you, and just you. What is your relationship with alcohol?

(4) ex-Twitter blues?

Untitled

2024 was the year in which I – and a considerable number of other folks – made the long overdue decision to quit Twitter for good. I wrote this post in August, when I was giving serious thought to leaving. I finally deleted my account in November (see Time then to decide for the full tale of said deletion).

(5) This is your life now

ThisIsYourLifeNow

Sometimes it is good to take a clear-eyed look at where you find yourself in life. How do you feel when you think about where your life is now, in this moment?

If you are reading this post on or near to the day it goes out into the world, might I please take this opportunity to wish you an exceptional and peaceful festive season? I will be back next Saturday (28 December 2024) with my final post for this year.

May you be nothing but kind today, to others and to yourself.

May today be nothing but kind to you and yours.
