Batman, Oscar Wilde, giraffes and lots of flowers! A few personal highlights from July 2023, captured in tiny wee snapshots.
This is my latest monthly selection of snapshots of things that caught my eye over these past few weeks, comprising the month of July 2023 (plus the final few days of June, as my last monthly snapshot selection came out a few days before that month concluded).
Tuesday 27 June 2023: Of dahlias and dark knights

A very lovely flower that I spotted on my early morning walk. I tweeted this picture out to the world, asking what kind of floral delight it might be. A whole host of lovely souls were so kind as to tell me that it is a dahlia. I am seriously tempted to try growing some dahlias of my own next year!

Batman is having a somewhat grumpy day…
But does he ever have any other kind, really?
(Speedy back-of-an-envelope batdoodle.)

An MJCarty avec newly harvested rose from the garden. Time to stop and smell the roses?
Friday 7 July 2023: Oscar’s London

This month, my wife and I got to enjoy our first little getaway, our first small escape from the pressures of everyday life, since prior to the advent of the pandemic. I wrote about this micro-holiday in London: Forever fresh, forever new.

Oscar looking somewhat quizzically unimpressed. This picture is from the packaging of an Oscar Wilde tapestry kit that I spied for sale at Liberty London.

“Stop and smell the roses.” Impeccable advice, always (as glimpsed in the Scarf Hall at Liberty London).

Broken poetry on the streets of London. The (full and unbroken) words form the start of William Wordsworth’s Remembrance of Collins (which you can find in Wordsworth’s Collected poems).
10 July 2023: London Eye at dawn

Monday morning dawned, and with it the day of our departure from the capital. The sun shines in your (London) eye.
Friday 21 July 2023: Giraffes and sunflower sightings!

Who run this world?
Giraffes!
(As spied in a charity shop window this morning.)

I was delighted to spot on this day that my first ever sunflower had at last developed an actual flower atop its lengthy stalk!
Saturday 22 July 2023: Further sunflower-y goings on

The sun put in a very brief appearance on this day… here’s my sunflower turning its face to make the most of those all-too-scant warming rays.
25 July 2023: A smidgeon of sunshine

In which the sun does its best to shine through right after a heavy downpour. There have been a lot of downpours here this month.
26 July 2023: Serving Ashdown realness

To close out this month’s selection, here’s a particular spot from the Ashdown Forest looking particularly beautiful on this particular late-July afternoon.
