Waking up on this side of the dirt

“As long as there is breath in my body and I wake up on this side of the dirt, everything is pretty good."  – Nile Rodgers (of Chic fame)

"Guess what? You’re still breathing.” – Gene Simmons (of Kiss fame).

I love these two quotations. I’m not normally one for sharing what might be termed ‘motivational’ quotations via Twitter and the like. But I woke up in the middle of the night and the idea of putting them both together in this here blog post appeared to me fully formed. As – for once, ever – this dead-of-night bloggage idea was still around when I woke up, here it is.

…while you’re lucky enough to be so
Besides the simple reminder that it’s worth appreciating the fact you’re alive while you’re lucky enough to be so, I think there’s a really interesting kinship in the general outlook on life of Messrs Rodgers and Simmons (and as the tweet below suggests, they remember one another fondly).

And if you’re an obsessive music fan, you will doubtless already know of the interconnectedness of the stories of Chic and Kiss, as well as the fact that – in extremely different ways – the music of each band is nothing but life-affirming. But I defend to the death, of course, the right of anyone out there not to enjoy either Chic or Kiss.

Some bonus words of wisdom from Heather Bussing
As a little bonus bit, here’s a link to a great blog post that top US blogger Heather Bussing published the other day, on the topic of How To Get Through A Hard Day.

Heather very generously shares a lifetime’s worth of sage advice here. I particularly like the advice under these two headings:

  • Don’t Fix Anything When You’re Losing It; and
  • Get Over Yourself.

And we can also add to this list the following: “Guess what? You’re still breathing.”

Sources of quotations from Messrs Rodgers and Simmons.

  1. “As long as there is breath in my body and I wake up on this side of the dirt, everything is pretty good."  – Nile Rodgers (of Chic fame). This must be a favourite line of his; He said it in a 2013 BBC documentary on his life and work, but I managed to find pretty much the selfsame words in this article. And here’s from whence where the Nile pic at the top of the page came.
  2. "Guess what? You’re still breathing.” – Gene Simmons (of Kiss fame). I’m paraphrasing this one, I think, but that is the sentiment of his words, even if I have no memory of the actual source.
